Medical Approach
There are similarities between the overtraining syndrome and major depression. The relationship between the two as well as evidence from certain case studies support the potential for using antidepressants to treat OTS.
Autonomic balance and the Sympathetic-Adrenal Medullary Axis (SAM)
- Regulated by norepinephrine/epinephrine
Cortisol and the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenocortical Axis (HPA)
- Regulated by serotonin
Use of antidepressants to restore neurotransmitter imbalance
- selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors
fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, paroxetine, sertraline
- norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors
viloxazine, reboxetine
- serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors
venlafaxine, mirtazapine, milnacipran
